A designation of whether the substance or category (e.g., coke oven emissions), identified as a Hazardous Air Pollutant (HAP), is a carbon-based (organic) chemical or not (inorganic). Organic HAPs are those listed in EPA guidance that must be aggregated into the "polycyclic organic matter (POM)" category for thresholds and reporting under the Clean Air Act, Section 112(b). Organic HAPs are primarily products of incomplete combustion, and they include fluorine and benzo(ghi)perylene. Examples: "O" for "Organic HAP", "I" for "Inorganic HAP", and "U" for "Unknown/Not Supplied". |
