The Service concerned may award the Antarctica Service Medal to a member only if each of the following is true:
- At least one of the following is true:
- The member participated in scientific, direct support, or exploratory operations in Antarctica on a United States expedition.
- The member participated in a foreign Antarctic expedition in Antarctica in coordination with a U.S. expedition and was under the sponsorship and approval of competent U.S. Government authority.
- The member participated in flights as a member of the crew of an aircraft flying to or from the Antarctic continent in support of operations in Antarctica.
- The member has served on a U.S. ship operating south of latitude 60S in support of U.S. programs in Antarctica.
- At least one of the following is true:
- The member was under competent orders to duty at sea or ashore for at least ten days south of latitude 60S.
- The member was a member of a flight crew of aircraft providing logistics support from outside the Antarctic area for at least ten missions (one flight in and out during any twenty-four-hour period equals one mission). |
